Project goals
The aim of the project is to contribute to the sustainable use of the resources of the Danube River by exploring the transboundary heritage of fisheries communities and presenting its tourism potential as an example of conservation of river ecosystems. The project aims to:
– Explore and present to the general public the unique cultural heritage of fishermen and their practices for maintaining a sustainable ecosystem on and off the river;
– Preserve this heritage for future generations through more measures to protect natural and cultural wealth in joint development strategies and policies;
– Demonstrate that economic benefits can be combined with the protection and conservation of the natural and cultural environment by creating and developing integrated tourism products based on the Danube fisheries heritage.
Outcomes
1. 10 existing fisheries communities will be identified, described and visualized in the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube River, through field and audiovisual research and implementation of a scientific approach, in the result will be the creation of an Internet-based digital database of fisheries heritage along the Danube.
2. 9 strategic documents related to the conservation and sustainable use of the cultural and historical heritage, as well as the development of the 10 fishing communities as tourist destinations, will be developed and promoted
3. 15 integrated tourism products will be created, promoted and tested based on materials and knowledge accumulated within the project.
Scope of work
The project covers the whole cross-border region and is implemented within the specific settlements in which active fisheries communities are identified.

01.08.2018 – 31.01.2020
