Forty children from different ethnic groups from the village of Alekovo and the town of Silistra will jointly participate in an interactive training on children’s rights on March 22, 2014. The event is dedicated to the European Week Against Racism and Democracy, which is held annually between 15 and March 23.

The event is part of the “Different children with equal rights “, which started in September 2013 and is run by a local non-governmental organization “Parallel Silistra”. The planned activities received funding from € 17,000 from the Programme supporting pof NGOs in Bulgaria under the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area.

The project develops the idea that teaching children’s rights, as a part of civic education should be carried out in multi-ethnic classes / communities rather than in mono-ethnic ones. Only in a multiethnic group, children can actually participate in the process of multicultural communication and develop tolerance and respect for their own rights and those of others.

Following this idea, the project “Different children with equal rights” aims to implement an educational model for teaching tolerance, anti-racism and anti- discriminatory behavior in mixed ethnic groups. For this purpose, children with mono ethnic schools will participate in the planned training. Associate Professor Daniela Tassevska of the University ” St. Cyril and Methodius ” developed a specialized methodology for teaching human rights in an accessible interactive form. In November 2013 18 teachers from schools in the villages of Alekovo and Iskra as well as from the town of Silistra, passed a course on this methodology.

The interactive training in mixed ethnic groups will be held on March 22, 2014 at 10 am in the conference hall of the school, “Alexander – link” Dobrudza Str 41 , 3rd floor , Silistra. Participating children will discuss children’s rights related to equality, access to education, freedom of expression and choice. Parents of the children are also invited to participate in the event.
