LEARNING THROUGH FAIRY-TALES
An educational activity for children from fourth grade in “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” School, lead by teacher Vanya Yankova, showed “How to use stories to teach children’s rights?”. It was held on May 16, 2014 and was attended by more than 20 children from different ethnic groups.
Using classic tales such as “The Ugly Duckling,” “Thumbelina,” “Hansel and Gretel” and others, is a part of the methodology on teaching children’s rights, called “educational theater”, developed by professor Dr. Daniela Tassevska of the “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” University. In November 2013 18 teachers had passed a training course on this methodology.
Through stories of fairy tales, this specific methodology emotionally engages children in situations of compliance or non-compliance with child rights. So, along with the characters, the participants co-experience moments of aggression, intolerance and discrimination. They then have the opportunity to discuss their experiences and reach conclusions that help them build a tolerant and understanding attitude towards others in a multiethnic community.
