The project involves 200 children from four schools in Silistra. In two of them, primary school “Otets Paisii” and ” St. Cyril and Methodius “School in Silistra, students are mainly from the Bulgarian community. In the other two, “Otets Paisii” in the villge of Alekovo and “Stefan Karadza ” School in the village of Iskra students come from Turkish and Roma ethnic groups.
Although there is legislation promoting desegregation in education and respect for the rights of children, these kids grow up separated and isolated from the different realities. Living in mono-ethnic communities, they form their perceptions about tolerance for other ethnic groups under the main influence of family stereotypes. Such an environment does not actually teach respect for the rights of children, even if such training is effectively included in the curriculum.
